Marta Moreno
I am Marta Moreno Pérez and I was born in Murcia, Spain’s lemon heaven! Since I was a little girl, I was always fascinated with languages. I didn’t have the patience to wait for school to start to learn how to read, so my grandma taught me. And even before I learned to write, I started learning my first words (and songs) in English (not very impressive with YouTube nowadays, but it was impressive in the early 90’s!).
My very first translations were the lyrics to Britney Spears’ songs. This love I felt (and continue to feel) for languages led me to the Bachelor’s degree in Translation and Interpreting at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, the Master’s in Audiovisual Translation at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and the Master’s in Secondary Education Teacher Teaching at the Universidad Internacional de La Rioja. To learn more about the linguistic and literary richness of my mother tongue I studied a Bachelor’s degree in Spanish Language and Literature at the Universidad de Burgos.
I started my professional career in the translation industry working as a project manager for a big translation multinational. My first adventure as a freelance translator gave me beautiful projects I am still fond of (such as the translation of a French cartoon’s script for dubbing) and brought me to Belgium to learn Dutch.
When I turned 27, I moved to the Netherlands to work as a translation project manager and in-house translator. Life happened and I ended up working as a Spanish as a foreign language teacher, but I soon learned that I was made to be a translator, not a teacher. After two years as a project manager and in-house translator in another translation company in Amsterdam, I am adventuring again into the world of freelancing, now providing lines of communication between the Netherlands and Spain, where I now live. And with a world of experience, memberships (and gray hairs) accompanying me. I am a professional member of Asetrad (the Spanish translation organization), NGTV (the Dutch one) and Wbtv (the official registry of sworn translators in the Netherlands).
I am also a member of APTIJ (the Spanish organization for sworn translator) and La Xarxa (the organization for translators based in the community of Valencia). You can also find my name listed on the registry of sworn translators of the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation, as well as on the registry of literary translators of ELV, the Dutch Centre for Literary Translation.
You might wonder about the name of my website: Lengua Materna (mother tongue in Spanish).
Firstly, because I translate into my mother tongue, Spanish. Secondly, as a woman, I want to highlight the importance of the role of mothers for babies when learning their language (meaning that we owe to our mothers the ability to understand and speak our mother tongue). Thirdly, because I rely more on human intelligence than artificial intelligence.
